Static applications are where there are no movement between two mating surfaces. In our industry they are most of the time the surfaces between “gland and bore” or “piston head and rod”.  
O-Rings are the simplest static seals that are the cause of most leaking problems. O-Rings are therefore considered to be the riskiest part that can lead to downtime and cause warranty issues for OEM’s. O-Rings can easily twist or damaged during assembly. The quality of the O-rings is another issue that often raises questions since they are no-name parts. Sealing capabilities of O-Rings decrease significantly when there is ovality, eccentricity or large extrusion gaps. Most of the time they are combined with back-up rings to eliminate large extrusion gaps. Back-up rings are technically precise parts that create additional material and labor costs.
